The castle of Lazise

What remains of the ancient Scaligero castle of Lazise is comprised in the fencing of the villa Buri, now Bernini. In the castle, the venetian magistrates resided at the time of the Venetian Republic and today there are some tombstones to remind of them. The territory was occupied, after 1796, by the French that placed in it a factory of saltpetre used for the gun powder. The Austrians, then, sell it to a private for only 1500 Liras and since then the castle was used as a mine of stones for those who wanted to build a house; the inner stairs of the four towers were even removed. The Count Buri bought the castle, he conserved what was left, restoring also some part of it that were not completely destroyed. The ancient harbour of the castle became a swamp through the negligence of the last possessor, then it was buried and transformed in a garden.
